Many years from now, we may very well support our Rebs with the image of a bear or a shark running around, but its very hard for me to imagine. I just recently graduated after my 5 1/2 years of undergrade at Ole Miss, and I have been a Die Hard fan my whole life. I have never Missed a home football game since birth. age 1, according to my momma, i was there. Every single game in the Vaught, every grove day, every game weekend for the past 24 years. I will always be in oxford for game day, always have, always will. Im only 24 and I can properly wave a flag. non of my fellow young folk remeber that lost art. I will love the Ole Miss till the day I die, just like all of us, no matter what. I say all this so that you can understand how I feel that this current mascot situation does matter, its not to be looked over, and we need to stop this. There is nothing wrong with no mascot, so why force one? I wrote this a few months back, before we had narrowed the mascot selection, but it still applies to our current situation.
Obviously the beloved Colonel Reb is gone and will never be the official mascot of the Ole Miss Rebels, but for the last 7 or 8 years Ole Miss has not had an on-field mascot, and no one has felt that we really need one. due to this lack of a mascot, we haven't suffered in sports, we havn't had a lack of enthusiasm from fans, so why force a mascot on us that has no tradition in a school that prides itself in tradtion. But wait, the students voted and a majority said that they wanted a new mascot, so we have to, Right?! actually no, thats not what happend at all. thats what we were all made to believe. lets break down this "vote" for a second, because no one has really shed light on the fact that the students were munipulated into voting for this fiasco of a "mascot selection process". The students had the option to vote for either of the following:
YES, I support a student led effort to develop and propose a NEW "on-field" macot to represtent the Ole Miss Rebels.
NO, I do not support a Student-led effort to develop and propose a NEW "on-field" mascot to represent the Ole Miss Rebels.
So option YES seems pretty clear cut, if you want the students in charge, vote YES, but Really what the students voted when they voted YES was to begin finding a new mascot. most voters only thought that they were electing to have the students in charge. And what would happen if you vote NO? Does that mean that a mascot is chosen for you?what does NO mean? It means nothing, It could mean anything.
On top of this word manipulation is the fact that less than 1/4 of the student pop actually voted.
So this argument will get us no where, because it doesnt matter any more, it happened, so we deal with it. I jsut wanted to let it be know. But how we deal with it should be do to all we can to not have a silly new cartoon animal/man/thing with no Ole Miss connection, no Tradition to represent us. The new mascot selection at ole miss is like one big joke. Every Mascot option to be voted on is just outragous. There are no mascot options that could properly represent the Ole Miss Rebels. How can a Mascot represent your sports teams and univeristy from something that has nothing to do with the university. Ole Miss, being a school that prides itself of tradition, should be the last school to ever consider doing something like this.
