Around SBN: Kobe Bryant Will Never Top Michael Jordan

Here's a Silver Lining:

Losing is pretty good for blog business.

Yay

So I guess I should say thanks to all you new visitors, even the dumb ones.  Today I'll be watching LSU @ State, Arky @ Bama, Miami @ VA Tech, and Iowa @ Penn State.  I'll flip around some other games but those will be the ones I really pay attention to.  You?

Good morning, glad to see you haven't completely given up on college FB for the rest of the season.

My viewing schedule is roughly the same, and if we lose to State, be sure to check over at ATVS for a drunken, irrational, profanity-laced tirade about Miles, Jefferson, the officials, the weather, the price of soybeans, or whatever comes to mind.

Are you sure?

Because according to ATVS, that kind of behavior is below the LSU fanbase—one which is famous world-wide for it’s amicability, mature behavior, and respect for humanity.

Oh, and don't get me wrong ARTiger,

I like you. I have plenty of LSU friends who are great people. But you and I both know that the LSU fanbase, as a collective, is perhaps the conference’s vilest.

Flattery is getting you nowhere.

I am curious who you are pulling for between us and State, however.

Ugh, I can't even decide.

Most of the time, I’d root for LSU over State, but I think a State victory benefits Ole Miss more this time.

I knew I had given you the ultimate unanswerable question.

LSU loss evens things up in the West if Bama loses somewhere, but you know you’d love to get us at home undefeated and highly ranked, wouldn’t you?

by artiger on Sep 26, 2009 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes and yes.

I’m having quite the inner quarrel. And with that, State takes the one point lead.

With 1:37 left in the game

your comment above is taking on an extraordinarily coincidental flavor.

Pullling for State...

1. It helps us if they win
and
2. It infuriates my State fans when I cheer for them… which I still don’t really understand.

I'm squarely on the coon-ass side

I don’t want the SEC to take a further hit by having another top 25 team losing this early in the season. Some order needs to be restored.

If I predict it, there's an 50 percent chance it happens.

LSU

“they are who we thought they were”- via coors light commercial.

i had a buddy just ask me if they were that bad or if state was actually decent, i think it might be a little bit of both. that and the game looks like one of those perfect storm trap games yall have been talking about.—- being typed as the tigers miss an extra point range field goal…. whatcha think?

I'm not sure who we are.

Now that I’ve unloaded the Smith & Wesson, I’ll mull over 31 rushing yards and thank God for that one.

Last night...

I had a dream that Kentucky beat Florida. If that happens, the world may implode in a week or two.

by wackydeli on Sep 26, 2009 3:02 PM EDT reply actions

Ivory Tower and I

actually got to watch South Florida take down Florida State. Then, we watched the end of the LSU State game, where he pulled for State and I pulled for LSU. How about Dan Mullen’s play calling?!? Idiot. You run it twice with two downs on the 6-in. line. Now, of course, we are watching Bama crush Arky, and we will probably catch Georgia-ASU later. Fun day so far with the beatings of Cal and Miami today.

Poor playing calling aside, I still can't believe that goal line stand.

I didn’t get to see the entire game (@*&%! work, but thank you DVR), but what I did see showed me we don’t tackle very well. State played us pretty well, and I count us lucky to escape. Thank God Chad Jones didn’t get hurt during baseball season.

by artiger on Sep 26, 2009 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions

You're right.

If Chad Jones hadn’t played today, y’all would have lost.

After more painful thought..

..on our loss, it wasn’t really so bad. We had a touchdown called back on a questionable penalty. Game won right there. Then a very blatant and obvious face mask penalty wasn’t called against SC on our last possession that put us at 4th and 19 instead of 1st and 10 going in for the score. Granted what only counts is what’s on paper at the end of the game, but this game was ours to win for sure.

Florida won everything with 1 loss last season.

Here’s to wishful thinking fellow Ole Miss fans. Here’s to hoping this ship gets righted fast.

Some thoughts from a USC fan

Having just shaken off the hangover from the Cocks’ victory over UM (I was there rooting on my beloved Chickens), I’m kind of tired of the “Ole Miss stunk it up” meme that’s become the CW around the country. Even fat Verne Lundquist snarked on UM during the Bama-Razorback game, saying Bama’s trip to Oxford is not going to be tough as thought. I just don’t buy it.

First, Snead is still a top QB in the league. Yes, it wasn’t a great game, and, yes, USC coulda-woulda-shoulda picked him off, but I liked his grit. He’s good enough to carry a good team .. and y’all’s O line should coalesce. They are a good run blocking line – when y’all ran in the 4th Q, you gained ground. Once Snead finds rhythm, then the pass blocking will improve … like peas and carrots, the O line feeds off the QB, and vice-versa. I think some of y’all have been a little too hard on your big uglies.

Second, the UM “D” is very good. While we’re ecstatic to have Ellis Johnson, you can’t many USC fans who will say many bad things about Tyrone. He’s a great coordinator (as well as a great recruiter). The Reb “D” is for real.

Third, I doubt Nutt will make the mistake of under-utilizing McClusker. I LIKED that kid. More than one time during the game, I was convinced we’d plastered that kid and he wouldn’t get up (you know how it is when your blood is up)… and then McClusker popped back up like he he didn’t feel a thing. He is the real deal (though I don’t think your Wild Rebel sets are as effective as last year).

Fourth, you might not have had a full house at Williams-Brice, but that was the hard core and we were loud as shit (my ears were ringing all day Friday). Williams-Brice is a loud stadium (I know we don’t play y’all often enough for many of you to have traveled to beautiful Columbia!) but we do yell as loud as anyone and its an enclosed space … your eyes vibrate. So, it was a baptism by fire but the Rebs held tough and didn’t wilt … and only needed one TD to win, so …

Anyhow, to come to a point, I think Ole Miss is a solid Top 15 team and if the pollsters and coaches are fair, shouldn’t fall lower than 15 especially after the real stinkers that have been delivered today (a la Cal at Oregon and South Florida at FSU, not to mention Michigan almost blowing it against the Hoosiers).

Michigan gets all this pub and yet had either South Carolina or the Rebs traveled to Ann Arbor, BOTH of us would have come away with a big win. Both of us would have won at Oregon. Both of us would play Va Tech better than Miami did today.

Sorry for the long post. I like your team. I wish you luck. Don’t be too hard on old Nutt. He is a GOOD coach. The Rebs should win 8 or 9 and finish with a strong New Year’s bowl and keep recruiting talent .. who knows, maybe the football gods will REALLY smile and one day it will be Carolina and Ole Miss in Atlanta battling for it all. It’s got to happen one day!

~ A Carolina Fan ~

PS – I didn’t see the face mask. It was too loud to have heard a whistle though!

PPS – you have GOT to send at least a pep band to an SEC away game. Even on a school night, in a different time zone, during H1N1 season. That was a mistake.
