As we all know, this chant can be a very demeaning one to hear for any football team. The first time I remember hearing it was when we played at Memphis State during Eli's senior year. I was a freshman and in the band, and I remember some Memphis students charging the field after the game with a life size inflatable doll with Eli's face taped on the head of the doll. As they punched the doll, the chant of "OVERRATED" echoed in the background. Unfortunately, I have a very bad feeling that we will be hearing this chant within the next two weeks.
Then it was SELA. Being the first home game and the first game for me to attend, I was so ecstatic for this game. After the 3-4 hours of beer and bbq in the grove, I pumped my pom pom in the air as the Pride of the South belted and blared out "From Dixie with Love". Hotty Toddy holy shit it's football season in Oxford. But boy was I let down...
It is Southeastern Louisiana......the LIONS from Hammond. And boy did we look like shit. And now with USC getting upset (you know they heard the OVERRATED chant in Washington), our Rebels have the potential to be the NUMBER FOUR ranked team in the NATION. Are you serious? Let's think about this. The number four team in the nation with players who muff punts repeatedly, with kickers who punt for 10 yards, and with receivers that drop passes that are dropped into their hands.
"Now hold on a tick! It's the 2nd game of the year! Our Rebels are still working out the kinks! Plus, didn't you see the scoreboard! 52-6! It was a romp!" Ok, I can accept that. But if we expect to be the number 4 team in the country and beat the potential number 3 team when they roll into Oxford on October 10, there is gonna have to be some major "getting of shit together"ness going on. I'm gonna stick with my Rebels through and through, but I just hate the gut feeling of having an overrated team destined for let down. I've had enough let down as a Rebel fan. (ie, LSU 2003, the Ed Orgeron era, NOMAHA, etc). Can we please step our shit up? Kthx<3u.
