Tuesday (Evening) Question
Generally, we are the "authors" of "content" around here - "here" being a blog and not a message board. Recognize, we do, that you've come here not to contribute, but to consume. Nevertheless, there is the sporadic occasion where, either for our benefit or for to exercise the thinkifiers of the masses, we ask you a question. Today's question is ...
Memphis has big receivers. The Rebels are returning a statistically inconsistent secondary. Who wakes up on Monday with a little more confidence than they had on Sunday morning?
Although he experienced a sophomore slump in 2008, Duke Calhoun was a 6' 4" top recruit that the Rebels lost to Memphis. Jermaine McKenzie (6' 3") is a highly-touted transfer from Miami not eligible per the NCAA - what the eff is their deal? Carlos Singleton is a 6'8" transfer from Ole Miss. Their size alone creates some match-up problems for the Rebels.
It's nothing new for one opposing unit to think that they have the edge over another one. I expect that these units expect to dominate their counterparts, and, obviously, that won't be true for one of them.

Jermaine McKenzie
I think he’s out for the game with an injury or something.
I also think that, due to Tommy West’s poor under-utilization of the height advantage, our corners will do alright, giving up two big plays. I’d say that’s a success when a receiver is a full foot taller than you.

NCAA Ineligibility ...
… Tommy West says that some family medical emergency caused McKenzie to transfer. The point of transfer rules is to make sure that better schools (see: Miami) aren’t poaching the talent of crappy schools (see: Memphis). It’s tough to find out why McKenzie transferred, but it’s difficult for me to imagine a scenario where McKenzie wasn’t drug kicking and screaming to Memphis

I think....
…that our secondary will rely heavily on the pass rush to help them. It’s a helluva lot harder to make a good catch when your QB is running around in the backfield screaming for his life and attempting to make a pass, than if there is no pressure…Right Tyson?
That being said, I agree with Juco that we’ll give up a couple of big receptions, based on the height difference alone, unless our guys come out firing like they did for the TT game.
I’ll call it a push, with a slight advantage to the Rebs; mostly because I’m a homer, but the other reason being big time game-time experience.
We have those WR's on lockdown...
If we can shut down (mostly) Texas Tech’s pass happy offense then we should have no problems with Memphis’ bullshit offense. Bring on the screens and draws. I’m tired of people being scared of Memphis and their godly receiver’s. Screw them. Memphis doesn’t have a chance.
Carlos Singleton never went to Ole Miss. you're thinking of
Carlos Suggs, another 6’7 WR who played from 2003-2006
I think our cornerbacks will do fine. One thing to remember is that a height advantage only helps if you’ve got a quarterback to put it on the money. Where you would really see that come into play would be fades down the sidelines or into the corner of the endzone. I don’t think they trust Hall enough to go deep more than a couple of times a game, and even then it’s probably just with the intention of keeping the defense honest rather than moving the chains.
Based off of the offense we saw last season from Memphis, they’ll be content to run screens most of the game, which is just fine with me.
If we had two experienced recievers over 6’4" we’d go more undefeated than we already will this season.
Pig Pen this here's Rubber Duck, and I'm about to put the hammer down.
Wide receivers rely on the QB...
… to get them the ball. I don’t think Arkelon Hall is going to get the time he needs to really test our secondary in the first place, despite being a fairly respectable mid-major passer. I also don’t believe Memphis is going to be able to establish the serious run game which will allow them to stretch the field through the air. They’ll have some dink-and-dunk success and a big, athletic play or two, but they won’t be able to get momentum going on the ground.
AK is no threat.....
Arkelon Hall has some good mechanics, but is no real threat. He’s a lot like Brent Shaffer was…..when they are in the game he plays like crap and when it’s over he can make some big throws to make the game appear closer than it really is. If Memphis had an actual QB I would be a little worried because Calhoun and Singleton can both play and may be playing on Sundays this time next year. However, as well all know from the Spurlock days, if the QB can’t get the ball to the receivers then it doesn’t matter.
Game over Biatches, Ole Miss 77, Memphis 10.

Every Year
It seems that every year we are talking about how tall the Memphis receivers are and that our DB’s are undersized (as they have been the past, I don’t know, 10 years) and this could create problems…and Memphis emphasizes draws, screens, and the slant route. Marshay is undersized, but he is a very aggressive player, while Cassius on the other side is more of a mental cover corner. They will be fine.
Also, I think there is no reason to be discouraged if we only score 28-34 points against Memphis. There is no reason to get fancy, show everyone any of our new stuff and go for a 60-spot against fucking Memphis. Our D should hold them to about 13 points, let’s keep it simple offensively (of course put up as many points as possible) and just beat their ass on defense and end this series with a big F-You..
Let me be 100% drunkenly honesst
For real we won’t lose on Sunday. Our players will come out there and snap dudes’ shins ‘n’ shit to prove a point. I don’t care how tall so-and-so is. We own it. This game was over years ago. Rebels by three scores. Jevan, Dex, etc stop playing halfway through.

Just like we saw last season...
The best pass defense is a sack. Maybe we’ll just injure their first string offense like we did against state last year. It doesn’t matter. Outside of a major catastrophe, Rebs win easy – not to say a major catastrophe is impossible, just really unlikely.

"There’s only so much you can do against your own teammates, there’s a limit. But there’s no limit against Memphis." Kentrell Lockett
No, I’m not worried about Memphis.
Every year we have to hear
How we don’t match up against their wr’s…
These, mind you, are wideouts that aren’t even all-conference America!!
There is a gross mismatch in this game of their OL vs our DL… That alone is a good enough pass defense
It’s going to be pretty f’n hard to bubble-screen your ass to a first down when it’s 3rd & 18!

Memphis throws way to many short flat passes for the height advantage to matter all that much. being 8 feet tall does you no good when you catch the pass and still have 11 men to beat to get back to the LOS.
I hope they try to go deep on us. Powe will devour Hall like a plate of Taylor Grocery Catfish.
If we have done anything ...
… we have perpetuated the idea that Powe eats lots of catfish. I, personally, have never seen the big man eating catfish. But I’ve said it so much that it MUST be true. He loves catfish.

Trust me. Powe loves his fish.
I love my fish. You love your fish. If you’re a Mississippian and you don’t love your fish, then you’re likely a member of Al-Quaeda.

Memphis overmatched at the line of scrimmage...
Our DL is our biggest strength facing their biggest weakness. West knows that. Memphis is going to try to shorten the game by moving the chains, running the clock to keep our offense off the field. Our pass rush will prevent them from utilizing their deep routes, to neutralize our pass rush they will run a lot of screens, misdirection and run a trick play or two in hopes of getting to the 4th quarter. The WR size differential will be an advantage to them in the red zone.
They will get a big play or two. Our offense will wear them down. Since 98 Houston Nutt’s teams are 32-0 against non BCS schools in regular season games and 11-0 in season opening games against non BCS opponents. 10-1 against the spread.
45-13
2005 Memphis game...
If I remember correctly, was played on Labor Day. I watched from the house instead of making the 45 minute drive in order to save a little money. I remember turning to a friend during team introductions when Patrick Byrne’s picture came up and saying, “I hope we break his leg.” Sure enough, broken ankle on the first series. (Some ginger took his place and I believe broke his ankle as well.)
In any event, be warned Arkelon. I hope this rag-tag group of Landsharks breaks both of your ankles and a collarbone. Good luck.
