Houston Nutt: Living Up to Expectations
Recently, there has been some chatter about how Houston Nutt has not lived up to pre-season expectations. I thought I would take a look at the statistical backing for this claim.
Surprise, it's not legitimate!
In five of Nutt's seasons at Arkansas, Arkansas received pre-season votes. In all five of those seasons, they either met or exceeded those votes.
1998 Arkansas: Pre - NR; Final - AP 16
1999 Arkansas: Pre - 22; Final - AP 17
2002 Arkansas: Pre - 36; Final - Finished the season 9-5
2003 Arkansas: Pre - 29; Final - Finished the season 9-4
2006 Arkansas: Pre - 28; Final - AP 15
2007 Arkansas: Pre - 24; Final - Finished the season 8-4; AP 24 when he left.
2008 Ole Miss: Pre - NR; Final - AP 15
This is a post I was working on. TSK does it better, and they're NOT Ole Miss homers like we are.

Destroying your traditions since [YEAR REDACTED].
pre-season rankings are always complete bullshit.
My main problem with Nutt’s tenure at Arkansas (outside of blatant non-professionalism) was the complete lack of consistency.
2003. Starts the season off 4-0 with wins at highly-ranked Texas and at Alabama. Top 5 ranking… then the infamous 0-for-October (its not the only time that happened)… leading up to an ass-raping at the hands of LSU at home.
This was a team that produced a multitude of NFL talent, including three first round draft picks.
Nutt plays on emotions so much that if his teams experience disappointment, they’re very likely to not recover and lose again the next week. I saw it happen plenty of times… that has nothing to do with preseason expectations. It’s Houston Nutt’s signature.
And that may be true, but...
The issue here is with people who say he doesn’t ever live up to pre-season expectations.
Statistically, he has never done worse than the consensus projection before the season.
Even if he loses some games he shouldn’t if we finish the season in the top ten, the fan base will go nuts. I don’t expect that to happen, but you never know.

Popeye's Corncob
While lambasting of coaches is permitted, lambasting coaches’ family members is not.
Below is a post by Popeye’s Corncob sin Becky Petrino reference.
For Yellowtail: a quiz
You know, kind of like the SAT. One of these quotes is a lie.
a) "Some guys are just not made to coach men." Rod Coleman on his former coach, Bobby Petrino.
b)"Nutt plays on emotions so much that if his teams experience disappointment, they’re very likely to not recover and lose again the next week." YTS
Answer: b: You took the 2003 season. Let’s look at 2008, where, out of the four losses, only one pair of consecutives occured. That would mean that twice, the rebels lost and won the next week (we took Florida after losing to Vandy, I won’t tire of repeating it). That means that three out of four losses were responded to with a win: much less than "very likely." If only this were the case last year after Ole Miss suffered two—back to back, nonetheless (that’s double emotional disappointment)—losses before travelling to Fayetteville. Which, I’d like to predict now, started our ninety game winning streak. That’s right. Ninety. Seriously, though, one thing I haven’t heard that much in these blogs about Nutt’s choking is the over-simplification of the concept of choking. Mistakes happen, sometimes often in one season, but to build a reputation from fans and media on this is a gross simplification of human psychology. We talk about players getting better every year, but coach’s seem to remain in a static trance of non-developement. Which is untrue, in any field. You either get better or get worse.

You haven't seen him in action with his own players yet, but it's coming.
Juco,
It’s quite Interesting how you convieniently took comments from one of Houston Nutt’s deciples that lazily decided not to buy into Coach Petrino’s system.
Talented or not, not every athlete is capable of handling Petrino’s system.
Petrino is a perfectionist, and if your not willing to be one yourself, your playing for the wrong fucking team.
If your not disaplined enough to play for the man, you might be better off in Oxford. (land of the Nutts)

Does seeing him "in action with his own players"
at all involve a 7-2 SECOND record after a trip to Atlanta?
Y’all pretend as if 2006 never even happened.

Where's the other 5years?
Juco,
How do you back up your statements when your only giving us half the facts? I don’t get it.
You say that statistically he’s NEVER done worse than the consensus projection before the season. Ok, so what were the consensus projections befor the other 5 seasons?
Christopher Martin Gonzalez
There weren't any.
He wasn’t pre-season ranked.
Don’t you understand? I’m not arguing that Houston Nutt did a great job at Arkansas. I’m not arguing that you have no reason to have been dissatisfied. The only thing I’m arguing is that when Houston Nutt has high expectations placed upon him by the national media in the pre-season, he comes through. The only reason I even care about that is because THIS season, he has high pre-season expectations.
The other five seasons don’t matter in this equation because they don’t mirror this season. Would it have helped if I had said, “there were several seasons in which Nutt was expected not to succeed and did not succeed?” No. Because that has nothing to do with THIS season.

Do you really believe Ole Miss will finish in the top 10? I don't.
Prediction for 2009 season:
Alabama
LSU
Arkansas
Ole Miss
Auburn
Miss. St.
Ole Miss won’t prove themselves to be an SEC chamionship team or a top 10 team.
Some people just don’t know what reality is yet.
