Bottom Line
We either learn to play defense or we are going to get schooled by the guards in SEC play and this will not be the season everyone is hyped up for. That was a pathetic display and that zone, while I was excited that we were trying something new at the time, SUCKED!

I thought we played good defense the other games of the season.
This game was a setback, but I don’t see the defense as the most concerning. I think we abandon penetration to the lane too quickly and revert to outside shots. We can’t do that. We need more high percentage shots because those perimeter ones don’t always fall.
I agree with your statement about our offense.
However, on defense, the only team with talented (and intelligent) guards we’ve played is the team that beat us. A team that can drive and kick is going to give us a hard time.

All of the above.
Basketball, like any sport, has a significant mental element. Southern wanted to win badly while our team assumed a win. Torwards the end, Chris Warren said “fuck losing becuase loing is lame” and won.

And I’m glad he came to this decision. A lot of our athletes have been just letting it go.
There's a darkness on the edge of town.
Defense wasn't great
But the worst play I saw was under the hoop. I know the rebounds were even at 35, but most of ours, especially in the first half, were at the beginning of the game. Reggie was getting them, Cranston was getting them, but we just gave them too many second chances. Kennedy seemed to be content with 4 guards and a forward against 2 or 3 guys for Southern down low. Refs didn’t help us, lot of touch fouls. Shocked Eustachy didn’t get a technical. But either way, gotta give Eustachy credit. If you search on youtube for Eustachy’s post-game comments, he praises Kennedy for scheduling us and rips into Stansbury for not scheduling Southern yet.
