Rebel Roundup - 12/22/09

Weekly Watch: Week 5 | ESPN
In ESPN's Weekly Watch, Rebel guard Chris Warren was named a part of the players of the week rotation for his career day against the miners of UTEP.

Ole Miss' Buckner Earns SEC Freshman of the Week | Brandt
Here's why:

Buckner, who stands 6 feet 9, averaged 9.5 points, five rebounds and three blocks in the two victories, scoring a season-high 11 points against UTEP in a 91-81 overtime victory.

Congrats, Reginald.  You'll have a real test on your hands tomorrow night against West Virginia's solid frontcourt.  Let's hope you're up to the test.

Ole Miss climbs, Tennessee Tumbles | AL dot com
Tennessee's 20-point loss to Southern Cal and Florida's loss to Richmond have propelled the Rebels to a somewhat scary position: the 2nd highest ranked Southeastern Conference basketball team in the AP poll.  Everybody knows our thoughts on Ole Miss sports programs when ranked, so we'll keep the naysaying to a minimum this morning.

2010 NFL Mock Draft: First Round Continued | Walter Football dot com
Walter Football has Greg Hardy going in the first round to the Colts with the 31st overall pick.  Their reasoning?

Defensive end is not a big need for the Colts right now. It will be a year from now when Raheem Brock and Robert Mathis are both free agents. With that in mind, Bill Polian is one of the smartest general managers in the NFL. Getting Greg Hardy this late in the first round provides incredible value. And there's definitely nothing wrong with having tons of depth on the defensive line.

Hardy falls a bit because of his injuries, but he should check out. He's still a borderline first-round prospect.

Okay, I can see that I guess.  As an aside, what in the hell is the deal with the Ole Miss logo they use and where in the hell did Walter Football stumble upon it?  An upside-down triangle affixed behind a Colonel Reb icon staning atop the words "Ole Miss" which are written, not in script, but italics?  Seriously, where did they get this?

I have seen that logo before...

however, I can’t remember where. Don’t think it was officially licensed. The Ole Miss lettering, however, was used on student IDs when I was a student: 01-05 then again 06-09.

On another note...

Jevan is slotted at 35 to the Browns. John Jerry does not make their first 3 rounds.

Let's all pray.....

That Jevan “Interception” Snead goes pro. I’ve had it with his ridiculous headcase plays ala Jay Cutler in the pros with the Bears. Snead has all the tools to be a good pro and great college player – just doesn’t have it between the ears. He regressed worse than Erik Ainge did early in his career at UT.

Let’s give Stanley and High Cotton a shot…..

Buck was great last week

And hopefully it was a harbinger of what is to come from him this year. I’m sure he’ll hit a wall at some point during conference season, but if he stays aggressive and active offensively, he’ll be a key part of our basketball success this year.

In case you didn’t see it, UTEP pounded Oklahoma last night on a neutral court, making our “neutral” court win look that much better. With ’Nova and KSU in the top 15 and UTEP and USM winning in bunches, our non-conference schedule should serve us well once the calendar turns.

Hopefully, it’ll pay dividends tomorrow night. WVU hasn’t really played anyone this year, nearly dropping a game to Cleveland State last weekend. Texas A&M and Duquesne are probably the 2 toughest teams they’ve played.

They have, they're 9-2

But they’re not as good as KSU or ‘Nova and at this point, I’m not sure they’re as good as UTEP. None of that matters tomorrow night once the opening tip goes down. After a somewhat quiet Puerto Rico tournament, this is a big showcase opportunity for Terrico. I hope he takes full advantage of it.

I agree...

that WVU has not played much competition, but I don’t think that the KSU or Nova teams we played were very good either. They have grown a lot since then. Not to mention our struggles against the likes of McNeese.

I think we have a great opportunity to beat West Virginia, but I think you are comparing apples to oranges.

No lumping

Just saying that TAMU and DU were the two toughest non-conference opponents the Mountaineers have played to date. The Aggies are obviously a good team, better than Duquesne, but they’re not as good as Kansas State or certainly Villanova. As UTEP finds a rhythm with Caracter in the rotation, they’ll be very good as well.

My original point was that our non-conference schedule should (theoretically) have us prepared for WVU tomorrow night. KSU and VU are better than you’re giving them credit for, particularly VU. They were a F4 team last year and provide something of blueprint for us to emulate with a guard heavy rotation.

I know more about college basketball than you do. It's a law. Like water. Or dinosaurs.

Neither of those things are laws!

Excellent reference and, yes, you have shown you know a bunch about college ball.

Loved that show

I doubt it comes back for a second go-round, but FX has done a good job pairing oddball comedies with Sunny. Last year, they came up with Testees, which was admittedly hit-or-miss, but the good ones were very, very funny.

Duquesne?

i’m not sure it is fair to lump TAMU with Duquesne. And you should give TAMU their due credit. They are a good team, and their loses are to WVU and UNM.

Logo from Yahoo Sports

I’m fairly certain that the logo was used by Yahoo Sports before the Rivals integration a year or two ago. I used to see that logo in our basketball boxscores on Yahoo if I remember correctly.

The Logo...

is from the Tuberville era. I want to say it’s from the 1996-97 season.

You would be correct if you said you saw it on the cover of the final books/box scores although I also think it was used in some of the media guides.
