SEC so far

For a lack of a better title, this is just my thoughts and ramblings.

Star-divide

SEC West

Looking at Alabama's remaining schedule, I think it's safe to say they will win the SEC West. They've got a week off before playing at home against LSU. Then they go to Starkville, then host Chattanooga, then go to Auburn. End of regular season. This means that unless they collapse and lose the LSU game - the only realistically game they very well could lose/will lose if they lose any of their remaining games - and either the MSUx or Auburn game, they are your SEC West champs.

Of course I for one am hoping they lose 2 of those last games and, of course, Ole Miss wins out. That would make Ole Miss SEC West champs.

But I think, again realistically, Ole Miss will be lucky to beat LSU and Tennessee - unless LSU collapses between now and Nov. 21 which isn't likely with games against Tulane, Alabama and Louisiana Tech before meeting Ole Miss and unless Tennessee stops getting better each week and goes in reverse which I don't see happening with games against South Carolina and Memphis before meeting Ole Miss. This means we will meet some pretty damn good LSU and Tennessee teams - unless the Tennessee/Alabama game was a fluke and Tennessee just really hasn't improved at all. Of course in that end, if LSU can win out, including beating Alabama.. well.

Realistically - that word again - I think we end the season at 8-4 but I reserve the right to request this FanPost be deleted if Ole Miss wins out. Here's hoping Jevan Snead's mohawk does what it did last year - win the rest. lol

SEC East

Well, that's pretty much a gimme to Florida. They've got 4 games left... Vanderbilt, South Carolina, Florida International and Florida State. If you've been watching football this year, you know Vanderbilt sucks and Florida State has caved in on itself. Florida International? Indeed. That leaves the only trap game for Florida... South Carolina with of course former Florida coach Steve Spurrier.

South Carolina has Tennessee, Arkansas, Florida and Clemson left.

Umm, yeah, Florida - Your SEC East champs.

SEC Championship

Florida vs. LSU - that's my prediction.

And on a related note..

LSU thrashes Auburn… and doesn’t move a single spot in today’s AP poll and only 1 spot in the Coaches Poll? Just one more reason, among many, that I think the polls are a joke. LSU would destroy Boise State, TCU, Cincinnati and Iowa. If USC can be #4 with 1 loss, LSU should be #5 with their 1 loss. Just saying…

I completely disagree.

Thrashing Auburn signifies nothing. LSU would struggle against every team you listed.

by The Ghost of Jay Cutler on Oct 25, 2009 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

I beg to differ, respectfully, sir.

I don’t think we would clobber every last one of them, but struggle? Come on, Cutler, have these Razorback fans gotten you too worked up to think straight?

Up until this weekend, LSU hadn't convincingly defeated

anybody worth a damn. And saying Auburn is “worth a damn” might be a bit generous at this point.

No argument there

But have those other teams really beaten anyone worth a damn? We could say Iowa has, not so sure about the others. I would think that with the way our defense has played lately, those other teams wouldn’t exactly light up the scoreboard.

However, I don’t mind not being ranked higher than what we are right now. If we take care of business, the ranking should take care of itself.

I tend to agree with Ghost, but I think LSU does “clobber” Iowa. Just sayin’.

Iowa would beat LSU

in the ugliest game this side of 3-2.

Iowa plays football like moving towards the singularity...

they make every game ugly, and, this year at least, win them all.

It’s not about LSU really.

Arkansas site

I saw where you said on the Arkansas site that Ole Miss wouldn’t have won without the dropped passes. Seriously, the 551 yards of total offense had nothing to do with our win? The dropped passes sure helped, but they did have a 58 yard tipped pass td on 3rd and forever that evened out the breaks. (especially considering the 3 turnovers we served up for them)

by Runner1 on Oct 27, 2009 10:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Considering

Ark would have had 500+ yards if only their receivers would have caught those perfectly thrown passes, and considering 4 of those would have been touchdowns for another 24 points.. yes, Ole Miss would have lost.

Pardon?

They had fewer than 50 yards rushing. So you’re saying that if it weren’t for his receivers Mallett would have thrown for 450+ yards?

by The Ghost of Jay Cutler on Oct 27, 2009 2:35 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess we weren't

watching the same game. I saw 4 perfect passes dropped that otherwise would have been TDs.

4????

They did not drop 4 touchdowns, one touchdown for sure. I do not know that they would have ended up with 500 yards. You know though, that a touchdown in any of those situations changes the entire game. So to make that statement is ludicrous.

LSU is still overrated

How can you say LSU should be ranked above Iowa? LSU’s most impressive win (in terms of quality of opponent) is against an under-performing Georgia. Iowa has beaten Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, and PSU (in Happy Valley, too). Let’s get real. Michigan =~ Georgia. LSU’s resume can’t keep up.

On top of that LSU ranked above Oregon? Even more egregious, higher than Georgia Tech? A team that’s beaten Virginia Tech, Clemson, and UNC and has a non-embarrassing loss @Miami. Luckily for LSU, as the ESPN College Football homepage is headlining now, they all but control their own destiny. Beat Bama, Ole Miss, Florida, and Arkansas (who may not be ranked, but are still respectable enough to mean something), and it’d be near impossible to keep them out of the title game. Unfortunately for GA Tech, their only remaining games are Duke, Wake, Vandy, and UGA. They’re the ones who lose since they aren’t getting credit for being 7-1 in the harder part of their schedule while teams like LSU get inflated ranking due to past performance. (Yes, I am biased, and no, I am not saying GA Tech should be in the discussion for national championship. I’m just pointing out that at this point, GA Tech’s resume is better than LSU’s, yet the rankings do not reflect that).

I would not put us ahead of Iowa.

If we somehow win those four games you mentioned, I think our resume tops GT and Oregon. Past performance is undoubtedly giving our rank a boost.

Sorry bro

You need to check your math.

Of course I for one am hoping [BAMA] lose 2 of those last games and, of course, Ole Miss wins out. That would make Ole Miss SEC West champs.

Bama needs 3 SEC losses for Ole Miss to go. They own the tie break.

by LSU Jonno on Oct 26, 2009 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

No

Really?

I was thinking if we win out and Bama has 2 losses – to LSU and Auburn – we’re in. LSU is a realistic loss for Bama and actually Auburn is a realistic loss too because that game, Bama/Auburn, is like Ole Miss/MSU where most of the time records and suckage don’t matter and it’s anyone’s game.

That assumes that we beat Ark at year end, right?

For the last two years that has not been a safe assumption. Hell, it almost never is.

by artiger on Oct 26, 2009 9:03 PM EDT up reply actions

Actually, no...

The Iron Bowl is contentious, but ,far and away, the higher ranked team or team with a better record usually wins that one. (Trying to find your exact record, here).

Here ya' go...

86% of the time, the team with the better ranking/record wins the Iron Bowl

not if there is a 3-way tie @ 6-2 between OM, LSU, and BAMA

If LSU beats Bama, OM wins out, and Bama loses one other (MSU or AU), then OM wins the West.
Bama would lose the first tie break-divisional record; both OM and LSU would be 4-1 against the West, Bama 3-2.
Then OM wins the next tie-break over LSU, head to head.
Rebels win West
Long Shot, but most realistic scenario for OM to win the West.

If there was a 3 way tie you are right.

Ole miss will be mathmatically eliminated this weekend though. so this is all moot.
