Andy Kennedy Arrested

Yeah. You read it right. Andy Kennedy was arrested when he arrived to Cincinatti for the Big East / SEC Matchup.

No comment on the story until we learn more.

I'll just say that I hope it's not true because I really do believe that Andy Kennedy is a good basketball coach, and I want to hold onto him.

i think he's a good coach, the kind of tough nosed coach i appreciate in college basketball, but i don't really believe a coach that promotes thug life (if you've been to a game at the tad pad, you'll understand) and getting piss @$$ drunk in sweat suits at the library is the answer for ole miss. and just when we thought we had gotten over the whole "ole miss is full of racists" thing with the debate, AK goes and pulls us right back in. FIRE HIM

We might as well go ahead and start talking about who we want to replace him. I guess Owen Miller will serve as interim during the search but I am in no way interested in letting him take over permanently.

Any thoughts on possible replacements?

Maybe someone can convince Bob Knight to get out from behind the sportscaster table and coach our team tonight.

Sounds like a classy guy.

by Anonymous on Dec 18, 2008 11:10 AM EST reply actions   0 recs

Owen Miller? My guess is Michael White. IF anyone is surprised this actually happened you are a moron. This shit has been going on since he arrived in Oxford and it got bad with him and his assistants last year, it was just kept quiet and away from the media.

They need to start over with this staff. Or at least get rid of AK and Torrey.

I don't think we can afford to keep him now, that "racial slurs" has been used. How in the world is he going to recruit now??

I think this should be referred to as AK's War on Terror from here on out.

Half as good of a drunk brawler, creepy old guy at OBC, or jort-sporting Marshall Mathers wannabe. I mean if the goal is to totally ignore everything college sports stands for, why not just bring an ABA team to Oxford. Let John Dessler buy it, we'll convert the roller-rink on South Lamar, jager-bombs on the house if someone gets a double-double. Surely you have to hold your coach to a higher standard than your players or your students. I mean if a sophomore gets busted 2 years in a row for an alcohol related incident on or off campus, he's suspended. I usually don't post, but this is about the dumbest thing the athletic department has done. You knew this was going to end up with a black-eye to the school (figurative/literal) but somehow a decent record will atone for being a terrible guy. I never had to worry about Rod Barnes slipping a MickeyFinn into my dates Pinot. This guy is a cancer, I hope he's gone. (Tried to come up with a witty ABA name for our new team, suggestions are welcome)

A muslim accused him of making a slur. Big deal. I say he's innocent until proven guilty. Besides, the muslim prolly had it comin'.

I can hear it now....

Super Duper High School BBall Stud Recruit: Mom, Dad, I really like Ole Miss. I think I'm gonna commit.

Dad: Son, the coach is a racist.

SDHBSR: Oh, right, I'm going to State. They're better anyway.

Rob Evans is sitting at Arkansas...lets call him up

Doesn't Nutt have a brother/cousin that's a basketball coach?

by Cal Wells on Dec 18, 2008 12:07 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

And let me make it clear for you guys...if you care...i really hate this for AK and Ole Miss. I really like(d) Kennedy and think he's a great coach. As long as his extracurricular activities didn't become a problem, publicly, i was fine with him. But now this has happened and i don't think he'll be able to recover. It's a real shame.

by charlymc on Dec 18, 2008 12:08 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

now the story, at least AK's, is that he and a group of coaches got into the cab and the cabbie called one of the coaches a N****** and AK blew up on the guy.

Cal,

Houston does have a brother named Dickey Nutt (I'm not kidding) who was the head basketball coach at Arkansas State, until he resigned at the end of last season.

by Greg Heidel on Dec 18, 2008 12:36 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Just found out Nutt also has another brother named Dennis who is also a former head basketball coach at some school in Texas. Apprently he is now a profession scout for the talent-laden Charlotte bobcats.

DICKEY NUTT FOR HC

From Rivals Message Board....

This makes me feel better. Reply

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AK and staff wanted to get in a cab ourside of a Cincy establishment. The cab driver said "only four riders in one cab." Andy and four others found another cab and got in. The cab driver pulled up next to the cabbie who had turned them down and the two drivers got into a heated verbal exchange. Andy told the the cab driver to pull over and let them out. He refused, locking the doors from the inside and drove off with AK and four others in tow. There was a verbal exchange demanding he unlock the doors and let them out. Two blocks later, he pulled over. The cabbie demanded payment - the passengers refused and an argument ensued. The cabbie called assistant coach Torey Ward a racial slur. After more verbal exchanges, another cab was hailed and the coaches were headed to the team hotel when the police pulled them over and arrested AK.

The eyewitness I have talked to said all the charges are absolutely incorrect and the cab driver's account is filled with lies.

AK and Pete Boone met this morning and Boone was satisfied Kennedy was telling the truth. Reportedly, it will be business as usual tonight at the game, with AK in the lead chair.

There is supposed to be an official statement from the school shortly. AK has been advised by his legal counsel to not say anything to anybody.

Naturally, we were not there, but we trust our source that this is the account of how things went down in the unfortunate incident.

Explain what our basketball coach and staff were doing out at bars at 1a.m. while the players were at the hotel. Moreso, if they were sober and coherent how were they so inept and incapable of diffusing this situation if it is really as innocuous as what is being reported? If the information provided in this report were true, the cab-driver would be charged with kidnapping. Cab drivers cannot lock the doors to prevent someone from exiting (unless it's the bone collector). This sounds to me like the same stories I heard (and told) at the frat-house Saturday morning after getting bailed out of Lafayette County. Ask yourself this, when is the last time your father and his co-workers were arrested for beating up a cab driver and hurling racial slurs?

Whew, good thing people aren't jumping off the deep end before getting all the facts straight. Man some people are so stupid. By the way, how does Kennedy promote "thug life"?

by warchief on Dec 18, 2008 1:44 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Does it really matter what "really" happened? The coaching staff was out boozing at 1am. Those players are really gonna respect their curfew now.

by Anonymous on Dec 18, 2008 1:55 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Get Dickey Nutt on the phone. He has the same basketball genius that Dale has for football.

by Anonymous on Dec 18, 2008 1:56 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I still haven't heard what slurs the coaches used but since the cab driver was Muslim, I am guessing they weren't "racial slurs" but rather "ethnic slurs". No one can deny the contentious racial inequalities outsiders often associate with Ole Miss, but it is truly a disgrace that "journalists" don't know the difference between "racial" and "ethnic" slurs. The people saying the slurs will hurt recruiting are also idiots. How many Muslim players does Ole Miss recruit?

Disclosure: I don't advocate racial and/or ethnic slurs in any form.

CW:
Quit being a douche. It is obvious that you have had a problem with AK before this even happened. Join a church league and worship that coach. This is about being a winning coach, not a role model for you. And cars do come with child lock.

Alright, look. I'm leaving the debate open to our readers and I'm glad that many of you have taken strong stances on this issue. However, I'm not down with people throwing out racial slurs on MY website. I know that there were some slurs involved in this incident but keep them off of the Cup.

As super nerdy as this may sound, it hurts the blog's reputation both within the blogosphere and among our advertising partners. Please think twice about what you're posting.

If you don't think this applies to you, then it probably doesn't. You know who you are. No more, alright?

by The Ghost of Jay Cutler on Dec 18, 2008 2:46 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

As super nerdy as this may sound some of the vulgar language y'all use hurts the blog's reputation as well. Although I'm cool with it, I would guess your readership would see substantial increases if the site were cleaned up a little.

I hope you can agree that racial slurs are much worse than vulgarities. I also hope that you've at least noticed that the Cup hasn't been so filled with "gutter language" (as one reader called it) as of late. We're just not that angry right now, I guess.

by The Ghost of Jay Cutler on Dec 18, 2008 3:04 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Calling for Dickie Nutt is not a vulgarity.

Why are all of you tools so outraged that the coaches were drinking at a bar at 1 am? Seriously?? If you want to jump to conclusions and assume AK is guilty and flip your shit about that its one thing, but upset that they went to a bar? Come on guys/lameasses

by wildandcrazyguy on Dec 18, 2008 3:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

i have no problem with AK going out with his co-workers enjoying himself. That's one thing. But it's something else entirely when he's the drunkest person at the bar, holding the wall up, as I've witnessed countless times in Oxford. Maybe that wasn't the case in Cincy last night, but I've witnessed it, and I'm sure some of you have as well. Not a good rep for the head coach of an SEC team

Anonymous: If a reader cannot draw a moral line between using some words that Victorian England decided were dirty because they sounded Germanic and harsh, described unsavory bodily functions, etc., and using language that insults or degrades a person based on his race or religion, then I don't want that reader.

"Cuss words" are pretty harmless in their origin, and have been blown out of proportion until people have forgotten the silly and insignificant nature of their origins. I'd write a "history of the English Language" post, but I'm really lazy and you wouldn't read it anyway.

fuck, shit, piss, cock.

I have absolutely NO DOUBT in my mind, had there been enough reason to fire AK Boone would have done it today.

To fire someone who has obviously snubbed his authority at every juncture would have made PB's year.

I was all for the wait and see approach and it looks like everything panned out. I believe him, and our basketball team played a hell of a game tonight. We lost ... but only by 9 points. Who didn't at least expect us to lose by 20 or more?
