2010 Baseball Preview: Rebel Outfield/DH

This is the first in a series of position breakdowns previewing the 2010 season of Ole Miss baseball.  In the upcoming eleven days, One Man to Beat and I will do our best to acquaint you with our team.  Today, I will discuss the Rebel outfield.

Ujcelxhaiermuej

The man himself in his coaching glory.

The 2009 Rebels achieved regular season success not seen in Oxford in many years as they were the 2009 SEC Champs.  This was added to the many accomplishments of current head coach Mike Bianco including a 2005 SEC West title, a 2006 SEC Tournament Championship, and four super regional appearances.  A large part of the 2009 success was an outfield that was full of speed with Logan Power and Jordan Henry.  Balls rarely fell in gaps, and they had a knack for making big plays.  Power and Henry have both departed, and Mike Bianco will be looking for others to fill in.

Rebel (Tennis) Roundup

No time to read a full post about Rebel tennis?  We understand.  You're still getting over the fact that the Rebels erased a twenty-point half-time deficit to Alabama at the Tad Pad, the Saints won the Super Bowl, and President Obama gave his full support to the Colonel Reb Foundation.

Don't read too fast; you'll miss things.

Nevertheless, we do have a few notes on the netters.  All courtesy of the Corporate Headquarters.

Men face Old Foe Georgia in ITA Sweet Sixteen.  The Intercollegiate Tennis Association National Team Indoor Tournament is in Charlottesville, Virginia this year at the Boar's Head Sports Club.  I've actually been to said club, and it is frat.  Charlottesville, on the whole, is a top-notch town with a fun and classy looking downtown.  Our boys should have fun.  What promises to be less fun, though, is facing a tough conference rival in the Round of 16.  Georgia Tennis is the class of the SEC, so we will know a lot about how far our young players are progressing after this match.

Before that, though, is Troy.  The Trojans are, allegedly, undefeated.  I say "allegedly" for two reasons.  First, their schedule shows that they have played patsies in Alabama State and Georgia Southern.  However - as a segue - their schedule is not entirely reliable, I think.  You can see very clearly here that we think we are playing Troy on Monday, February 8 (or "today") at the Gillom Center.  However, screenshotted evidence documented below shows that Troy thinks otherwise.

Troy_tennis_schedule_medium

Hey, Troy, what sucks worse?  Your tennis team or your sports information department.  Amateurs.

So, yeah, tomorrow.  2:30.  Gillom Center.  Kick ass.

And how 'bout them wimmerns.  After losing a tough match at Clemson in ITA Qualifying, the women came back to Oxford for a tune-up against Murray State, whom they handled with ease.  A bit of a layoff is in store for them, as their next match comes on February 20 against Texas Tech in Oxford.

And you know what, we appreciate that, Colts fans.  This guy is going to be in New Orleans in circa five days.  Envy me.

OUT OF THE OFFICE
Because of SNOWPOCALYPSE2.0 I ain't gotta work today.  The roads are all snowy and wet and the bus and metrorail ain't runnin.  So why am I up at 7:30 AM typing this, one may ask?  Skiing.  I'll be doing that.

Fuzzy 'n' Shit
That's what about four gallons of beer have done to my vision.  Get off of my back.

Ole Miss outlasts Lady Tigers in 3OT thriller | 2 The Advocate dot com
Take THAT, LSU! When I got a tweet about this game on my Blackberry, I read something about "Holloway's layup" putting the Rebels over the Tigers. "But, we just played Alabama, right?" Yeah, I confused Kayla Holloway with Murphy Holloway, oh well. Still great work by the Lady Rebs who needed to end their skid and get some conference wins to get themselves tournament ready.

Ole Miss Defeats Alabama, Initial Impressions | Roll Bama Roll
The SEC on SBN flagship (sorry, RockyTopTalk) has their impressions of Saturday's game up. Bama07, a Bama basketball guru if there ever were such a thing, writes:

Here's all that you need to know: Alabama blew a 23-point second half lead. That's my only initial impression. In the words of our very own Forrest Gump, "that's all I have to say about that."

Yeah, that's really all you need to say, Bama07.

You know, for a guy who never won anything of import after his Sugar Bowls, Archie Manning has spent a ton of time at the Super Bowl. While his middle son didn't win last night, I can't help but imagine that he, Eli, and Cooper weren't a bit excited for New Orleans.

Alabama Recap or "Screw This. Let's Go Eat Mexican. Wait. What Happened?"

First off, Ole Miss 74 - Alabama 67. That being over...

I listened to the entire first half of the game on the radio in my car. I was alone, and I was screaming at the top of my lungs. After calming myself long enough to find my telephone, I called Brian Walker's Elbow and vented. He was ready to give up as well. I wasn't watching on television at the time, but I would wager my life savings that the team looked lackadaisical. Over and over again, we would put up a prayer with 20 seconds left on the shot clock then struggle to get back on defense only to watch Alabama score on a high percentage shot. I can't remember the number of times I heard David Kellum say, "Uh oh. We're in a four on one situation." How does that happen so much? Laziness?

In case you missed the game, the score at the half was Alabama 40 - Ole Miss 20. I was disgusted. Alabama is not a good basketball team. They're not terrible, but they're not a team that should be capable of beating us by twenty points at the half. Bama is 13-10 on the season and 3-6 in the SEC. That's not very good.

Anyway, I was in rare form. I suggested that the season was over; We were going to fall downhill and lose a good number of games, perhaps not hitting the 20-win mark. I turned off the radio. I happened to be home and suggested to my wife that I was in a bad mood and wanted cheap death. Cozuela it was. Mmm.... eating dinner for two for less than ten dollars.

Curious, after filling myself with free chips and salsa and a three dollar chicken burrito, I sent a text to google with the words "NCAAB Mississippi". What I got back startled me. "Game in progress. Alabama Crimson Tide 56 - Mississippi Rebels 56."

"WHAT?", I said.

"What happened," asked my wife.

"It's tied. It's fifty-six to fifty-six."

At this point, my wife did something that reminded me just how lucky I am. As she was darting from the booth, I managed to hear something like, "TV at home." Having already paid, we literally ran to the car. She drove, and rolling stops were quite common on our trip back home.

By the time we got home, it was 61-56. Yeah I had missed pretty much the greatest comeback in Rebel basketball history.

So, that long story over with, I'll tell you my thoughts on the first half as well as statistics for the second half.

'Crootin breakdown: D-backs

Everyone loves a shutdown corner. At least, I know I do.

The Rebels have not in recent history had a Champ Bailey, Darrelle Revis, Deion Sanders or Charles Woodson. Okay, maybe not Deion, but you know what I mean.

With the SEC being "all about speed," the secondary can be vital not only to stopping some of the fastest WR in the country but also stepping up and making open field tackles against some of the best halfbacks in the nation.

Ole Miss made the secondary a priority this recruiting season by signing six players who project as either cornerbacks or safeties. This includes three well-recruited corners and a safety who could start every game next season.

I got the luck of the draw in our position by position breakdown: defensive linemen and defensive backs.

These were by far the most well stocked areas on the team this year in recruiting. The Rebels nabbed six defensive linemen this year. There were six defensive backs who signed with the Rebels.

It was absolutely imperative that the Rebels get this many players however at these positions. Find out more after the jump about the defensive line additions.

There's only eight games remaining the regular season for the Ole Miss Rebel basketball team.

The expected and unexpected has the Rebels just under where most fans thought they would be at this point. Ole Miss(16-6, 4-4) is looking to avoid its first three game losing streak since last season in SEC January play.

Taking on the Alabama Crimson Tide at home has not always been an easy task, however, especially when on the slide. The Rebels have also already dropped two SEC games at home this season, though Andy Kennedy boasts a 53-9 record in Oxford during his tenure.

Did Dan Mullen Really Win an Instate Recruiting Battle?

Yeah Dan, you just keep telling 'em what they want to hear.

More photos » Butch Dill - AP

Yeah Dan, you just keep telling 'em what they want to hear.

When I got hired here, I wanted to make a statement by recruiting the state of Mississippi very hard. We went out and recruited 16 players from Mississippi this year which is more than Southern Miss and The University Of The School Up North combined.

--Dan Mullen, Signing Day Press Conference, 2/3/2010

No fewer than several dozen times during his National Signing Day press conference did Dan Mullen make mention of his desire to establish himself and his program as the premier recruiter of Mississippi high school talent.  And, if you were to ask him or any of the thousands upon thousands of enamored supporters he has somehow amassed, you would know that he is thought of as having done just that.

But did he?  If he really were to have "won" the instate recruiting battle, how exactly would one reach such a conclusion?  And is doing such necessarily a good thing?
